i guess we are hoppers and jumpers

I learned very quickly after we first applied for our adoption that the adoption world was quite, well, um… diverse. There are many wonderful people out there who are adopting for a bazillion different reasons. There are plenty of opinions and ideas of how to raise an adopted child and what that means. There are also plenty of opinions on how you should adopt and from where you should adopt. I believe that these are all very personal decisions. Currently, one of the hot topics in the adoption world is all of people who are dropping out of the China program because of the long wait. A lot of them are signing up to adopt from Vietnam, and this is seriously annoying the Vietnamese adoption community. They are referring to these people as “China Hoppers.” For us, deciding to adopt from both Vietnam and China took a lot of thought. It was a BIG decision. When we were first looking into adoption, Vietnam was not available to us. The borders were just starting to open up again after being closed from 2003-2006 to investigate corruption. The China program seemed stable and reliable and that sounded good to us. We had been through enough so stable and reliable were perfect. We knew from the beginning that we wanted to adopt two children and have them be very close in age. We soon realized that this was simply not going to be possible with China. With the slowdown and all of the new regulations it would be years before we could apply again. We are also really ready to have children and have been waiting for what feels like forever. China is SLOW. So when Vietnam opened up, we DID jump on it. It feels more right for us anyway. To be honest, I am more partial to the program and to the country. The food is a favorite too. I am very proud to be a hopper. It makes me one step closer to being a mom.
